Facades and colors

Photographies and desing: Nicole Beuchat. This book is in English, French, German (+ off-print in Japanese )

100 flat blocks of colours and 100 photos of facades – all taken in Switzerland – in a way that shows the building, without allowing one to identify it but to see the colour. On the left-hand page is the photo, on the right-hand page a flat tint block of exactly the same colour than the facade opposite. A book about photography, contemporary art and printing technique. Facade and colours is an invitation to see the city - to see the colour of the city. Unveil the colour before the architecture. The city, grey-coloured at first, slowly begins to unveil its palette of unexpected richness if you are patient enough. For those who take the time to really notice, it becomes a highly intricate colour chart. This is also the very nature of colour itself: it is as ethereal and as intangible, as thought. "Give me a colour!" From a physical point of view, this may seem difficult. It's not a tangible object that can be passed around physically. Yet colour forms part of every object, artefact, plant, stone - everything that surrounds us; everything in the universe has a colour - waiting only for light to come along so it may be revealed. Colour is to objects what taste is to food. And light would be its salt! This is so, as depending on the light, a city changes mood, ambience, colour. The same facade could appear gloomy, or radiant; sad, or joyous... Texture also matters, as, depending on the type of surface, light either holds onto or reflects off a facade. Light, texture, and the third factor - framing. "It's all about framing". On the right-hand pages, the flat tint blocks resonate and emphasise the dominant colour of the photographed facade. These flat tints act like a developing bath - providing delightful semantic-picture interplay, as here it's the very essence of photography.

An invitation to see the city - to see the colour of the city.
